Small Shop

Being a small shop has allowed us to maintain close communication throughout the machining process.  All employees have multiple points of contact throughout the core vent making process. This encourages accountability and a "fresh eye" quality check.

Inserting Tool

The vent inserting tool is a 6" long cylindrical bar of steel.  Projecting "tongues" formed on one end fit into it's corresponding core vent slots.   With the vent in position on the end of the inserting tool, it is easily driven or pressed into the bore in the box, while the tongues prevent the collapse of the slots.

Core Vent Specs

Dimensions of our Core vents:

    -  Standard vents range from 1/8" to 1-1/2" in diameter growing in mostly 1/16" increments.

    -  All of our vents, 1" and smaller, are made .001-.002" larger than the listed diameter.  That allows you to drill the standard fraction                 size hole into which the vent will be placed.

    -  5/16 inch long vents, is our standard vent length along with  3/8 inch long and 1/4 inch long vents.

    -  Head thickness depends on the length of the vent: 5/16" & 1/4" long vents have a .090" head thickness; 3/8" long vents have .156"               head thickness.

Metal Specifications of our Core vents:

    - We provide three standard metals from which the core vents are made: 20-11T3 Aluminum, 360 Brass, and 12L14 Steel.

More Details

    -  Core vents without slots, "blanks" are available.

    -  Smooth sided and relief sided parts:

Smooth sided (standard for Brass and Aluminum) have a uniform diameter the length of the part and allows a more seamless                       look on the mold.
Relief sided parts (standard on Steel) have a slightly smaller diameter on the crown of the part where the slots are cut to allow a                 press fit that will squeeze less and effects the slot width less.

    -  Custom size or knurled core vents are available.

    -  Dovetailed slotted vents and special slot widths are available – PLEASE CALL OR EMAIL FOR QUOTATION.

Inserting Tools

  • The inserting tool is a cylindrical bar of steel of suitable diameter approximately seven inches long having projecting tongues formed on one end.  These tongues are equal to in number to the slots in a vent of corresponding size.  (For example, the 5/8” vent has eight slots of equal width equally spaced.  The inserting tool has eight tongues formed on the same center distances as the slots and of suck a thickness that the tongues and slots will mesh.)  With the vent in position on the end of the inserting tool, it is easily driven or pressed into the bore in the box, while the tongues prevent the collapse of the slots.  With the vent seated in the box the tool is readily withdrawn leaving the vent with undamaged and equally spaced slots.

Two tools are available –

  • The OVERSIZE TOOL: has a shoulder 1/8” larger in diameter than the nominal size of the corresponding vent, which permits placement of the top on the vent flush with any plane surface in the core box.
  • The UNDERSIZE TOOL: is approximately 1/16” smaller in diameter than the nominal size of the corresponding vent, which permits placement of the vent in corners, fillets, etc.
